Welcome to my why
It's not a question anymore about whether people face issues with their mental health; it's much more about to what extent, and do they have the resources and tools to cope and exhibit resilience.
Mental health is such a generic term for a wide array of ailments and challenges that affect most people. Myself included. I have a long history of depression, and less time being aware of PTSD. Anxiety comes knocking from time to time, as do floods of many other emotions, not all with as much stigma as depression and PTSD.
As I learn resiliency, as I unlearn harmful behaviors rooted in my mental health issues, I grow into a more complete version of myself. My generation is in a great place to really initiate change that will help heal generational trauma, and my kids are reaping the benefits of our relatively new found self awareness.
I don't expect them to not experience their own mental health issues, but I know they're already being set up to cope and bounce back from trauma, or any other ailment that plagues them.
In short, I'm on a soapbox saying we all need to be open and aware of what we and others may be facing, and not associate negative thoughts to anyone who faces mental health challenges head on. Let's continue to normalize conversation about mental health, and raise money for local resources to help anyone who needs that extra bit of help.
I'm completing 2,000 push-ups in 23 days to raise awareness and funds for the Canadian Mental Health Association. Please support me as I #pushforbetter from February 5-27.
All proceeds help the Canadian Mental Health Association to support mental illness recovery and foster positive mental health in Canada.
